Use this calculator to determine
torque necessary to achieve psi tension in the bolt.

(Click here to calculate torque to achieve a % of bolt yield strength)

Use the following Torque Calculator for ASTM A193 B7 and ASTM A320 L7 bolting, as specified in API 6A, 16A and 17D for flanges, and for B7M and L7M bolting stressed to 40,000 psi. TPI for 1" and smaller are UNC, 1-1/8" and larger are 8UN.

Some flanges can be over-tightened to the point that the ring groove or the flange can be damaged. The following 4 API flanges should not be made up beyond 40,000 psi bolt stress (tension), due to potentially high flange stress. API also specifies 40,000 psi stress for all sizes of flanges using B7M and L7M bolts.

Two coefficients of friction or factors, are recognized by API. A coefficient of friction of 0.13 approximates the friction with threads and nut bearing surfaces being bare metal, or plated, and well-lubricated with thread compound tested in accordance with API RP 5A3 / ISO 13678.

A coefficient of friction of 0.07 approximates the friction with threads and nut bearing surfaces coated with Fluoropolymer material (Teflon, Xylan, SermaGard).

Bolt Dia.

Enter bolt diameter (.625 or larger)
(Thread major diameter in inches and decimals)

Coefficient
of
Friction

Enter the bolt lubricant or coating friction coefficient in decimals.

(Obtain this information from the lubricant manufacturer)

API Recognizes:

Enter 0.13 for uncoated bolts using API RP 5A3 /
         ISO 13678 thread compound

or

Enter 0.07 for Fluoropolymer (Teflon, Xylan, or
         SermaGard) coating.

Bolt Stress
psi

Enter desired bolt stress in psi.
(Use no comma)

Enter 52500 for B7/L7 standard bolting
(Enter 47500 for B7 bolts larger than 2.500)
(Enter 40000 for B7M / L7M bolting)*

*

This calculator does not apply to modified bolting larger than 4.0" Dia.
