Subject:
Tee Orientation (Used as Elbow)
Question:
In your catalog you show a
Flanged Tee. It identifies
the welded flange as the outlet. I see Tees
like this used in choke lines with the welded flange as the inlet.
Instead of using a
Blind or Target
flange on the end of the run they use the body of the Tee to make a 90°
turn. The persons doing this tell me that the thickness of the Tee and
the type of metal used in the Tee will better resist erosion when
installed this way. Is this correct?
Answer:
If we understand you correctly you have seen a Flanged Tee used
as illustrated below:

We believe that less interior erosion of the Tee bore will
occur with the Tee installed in the manner illustrated below:

The orientation shown above creates a fluid cushion
beyond the 90°
turn so that the fluid tends to protect the body from erosion.
We believe no need exists for a Target Flange downstream on
the Tee as the fluid cavity in the Tee bore should offer sufficient
cushion.
For a thorough
discussion of this kind of application, see
Target Flanges.
