Question:

My company has purchased some No. 6 API 16A clamps from WOODCO USA. When I reviewed the documents we received with the shipment I observed that the test chart showed only a 15,000 psi test. Since No. 6 clamps fit 2-9/16” 20,000 psi hubs, as well as 3-1/16” 15,000 psi and 4-1/16” 10,000 psi hubs, I want to know why the test chart does not reflect a 30,000 psi test as the 2-9/16” 20,000 psi hubs would require?

Answer:

WOODCO USA manufactures API Spec 16A hub clamps for general industry use. To make these clamps usable for all intended hub connections, WOODCO USA hydrostatic tests all the clamps we make using hubs that apply the maximum load to the clamps.

See the table below, showing the applied loads on No. 6 clamps, per our design load calculations, using the hubs listed.

For No. 6 clamps, hydrostatic testing with 4-1/16” 10,000 psi hubs to 15,000 psi applies the greatest load.
