Spec 6A. Question:
My company has received an inquiry from a customer
who has requested that we supply a valve meeting the requirements of API
Spec 6A, PSL 2, PR 2, NACE MR0175 (latest edition). Please define the
meaning of PR in API 6A?
Answer:
The more recent editions of API Spec 6A have required
certain kinds of performance verification testing on designated wellhead
component designs. API Spec 6A, 19th. Edition, lists these components
and the tests required in Table F.22, on page 332. The Standard
designates 2 levels of testing under the categories PR 1, and PR 2 (PR
meaning "Performance Requirement"), PR 2 requiring more testing than PR
1.
Generally, API Spec 6A only requires "PR" testing on
equipment designs containing internal sealing means or mechanisms. The
product marking, PR 1 or PR 2 indicates the level of performance testing
the equipment designs have passed.
API Spec 6A, Table F.22 states: “Note 1: Performance
verification testing is not required for specified designs or features
that are completely specified (dimensions and material strength) in this
international standard”.
