Question: Upon pressure testing a newly installed flanged connection subsea at some 120 ft water depth, we established a leaking connection. Are there different types of BX gaskets on the market which could give a higher chance to seal? Answer: API Spec 17D calls for an SBX ring gasket for BX flange connection make-up underwater. These ring gaskets have a special vent hole, drilled in such a manner that water trapped in the ring groove above and below the gasket can escape to the equipment I.D. bore. Click here for a cross section view and additional information about SBX gaskets. Even equipment made-up on the surface, should it leak on pressure test, can have water trapped behind the gasket, making secondary tightening difficult or impossible.
