Subject: "SR" Ring Grooves
Question:
We manufacture RTJ gaskets and have been asked to
supply octagonal gaskets in SR shape. We have manufactured
SRX and SBX
gaskets in the past but have never manufactured SR gaskets. Are you
aware of SR gaskets and where we can learn about them?
Answer:
"SR" refers to a specific ring groove type and
dimension set, not a ring gasket. SR ring grooves accept standard
RX or
SRX* gaskets. These ring grooves only appear in API Spec 16A, where you
can find their dimensions with tolerance. The following table lists the
API Spec 16A Clamp Hub connectors with SR ring
grooves (2005).
To positively identify any connector of this type
encountered in the field, you may wish to record the dimensions on the
Worksheet you can find at
http://www.woodcousa.com/catalogs/clamp14.htm, and compare the
dimensions recorded to those on the Slide Rule at
http://www.woodcousa.com/hubs/hubslide.htm.
Some persons refer to SR ring grooves as "Deep Ring
Grooves." These ring groove dimensions allow the connector faces to
meet when made-up using an RX or SRX ring gasket. At WOODCO
USA we have never cut an SR ring groove in a flange, but we have heard
of this. Any flange that has this ring groove must also have additional
thickness and a raised face
similar to a BX flange in order to function reliably.
WOODCO USA recommends the use of SRX gaskets when making-up these
connections underwater.

API does not specify SRX gaskets with the
numbers shown here. WOODCO USA offers these, and other RX gaskets
with the SRX design modification, in order to facilitate making
up connections using ring gaskets underwater. |
