1 To:Subject: Oval bottom ring groove Question: Doesn't an octagonal ring gasket have better sealing efficiency compared with an oval ring gasket? Can I install an octagonal ring gasket in an oval bottom groove? Answer: In actual practice oval gaskets seem to coin easier than octagonal gaskets so we at WOODCO USA prefer oval gaskets for make-up and test, otherwise we find no difference. Some very old flanges that utilize “Type R” ring gaskets have ring grooves with rounded bottoms, and specifications for these flanges called for the use of oval gaskets in these grooves, do not attempt to use any other type of gasket in these grooves. Ring grooves in API flanges with “flat” bottoms will accept oval or octagonal gaskets. API specifications for flanges no longer show rounded bottom grooves. For a detailed explanation of how ring gaskets of all types fit and seal in grooves, see Field Appraisal of Ring Grooves, and Ring Gasket Handling and Inspection.
